Last night at our Macon County Board Meeting, Mrs. Patti Elkin was recognized for the 2023 Outstanding Secondary Mathematics teacher award. Ms. Elkin is a teacher at Macon Middle School. She focuses on hands-on activities and authentic opportunities to apply mathematical concepts in her classroom. She hasn’t let funding be a barrier and has written several grants in order to purchase materials for hands-on learning such as materials for Coordinate Plane String Art and Triangle Trivets projects where students demonstrated mastery of calculating perimeter and area. Ms. Elkin understands that students need to learn how to work together as a team and learn how to communicate with each other. Using her Kagan Cooperative Learning training, she engages students in math conversations in her daily instruction.
